Katharine: In my early twenties, I found myself working two jobs, bartending and waitressing, while trying to break into the world of real estate. The juggling act was grueling, but my family was my driving force. I knew that the flexibility and financial stability a full-time real estate career could provide would change our lives.
Every day was a hustle, working late nights at the restaurant and waking up early to follow my passion for real estate. I was saving every penny I had to quit my job. After five years of this, I reached enough consistency in real estate to sustain a full-time career. All I needed was enough money to buy a car and ensure I could cover my bills for several months.
And then, one day, an opportunity came that I couldn’t pass up. I found a house that perfectly matched one of my client’s preferences. I felt it in my gut—this was the house for him, and he was going to buy it. The house also offered a $10,000 commission bonus. It was exactly the amount I needed to feel secure and start a new chapter in real estate. It was a sign from the universe, pushing me in the direction I was always meant to take.
Just as I had thought, my client loved the house, and we got our offer accepted. Before I even had confirmation he loved it, I had already quit my job, certain that real estate was my future. It was a monumental turning point in my life, giving me the confidence to finally pursue my dream.
Nearly 20 years later, I look back on this moment as a source of inspiration. Because of the flexibility real estate has provided, I am able to be there for my family, never missing the big moments, and for that, I am forever grateful to have this amazing career.
Jessica: In the transformative year of 2010, I found myself at a crossroads. As a mom of two, I bought our first single-family home, upgrading from a townhouse. I was reaching important milestones for my family, but the market shift threatened everything I had worked hard for.
At the time, I worked as an executive assistant for a real estate team. Before that, I worked in appraisals, giving me extensive knowledge of homes and the industry as a whole. The 2008 financial crisis changed things, forcing the real estate team I worked for to reduce my salary. I needed to do something to ensure a secure future for my family.
This revelation marked a turning point—I was going to become a full-time Realtor. My mom was also a Realtor, but I was never quite ready to take the leap until it became my only option. The most appealing aspect that drew me to this decision was freedom. I didn’t want limits on what I could earn, and I wanted to be flexible for my kids, ensuring I was always there when they needed me.
As you can imagine, entering the market as a Realtor in 2010 was daunting, but I quickly found my footing. Armed with a background in appraisals, I realized I had more knowledge of homes and their values than the average agent. Additionally, I loved working with people one-on-one, helping them find the home to house their next chapter. In my first year, I surpassed my previous salary, proving I was exactly where I was meant to be.
